Hundreds of children and youths are among those who had to leave their First Nation homes due to flooding, with many kids being housed in hotels since March, said officials.

About 1,100 First Nations people in Manitoba have had to seek temporary shelter in hotels due to the flooding, with many people forced out of their homes for months.

High water levels on the Souris River last week damaged a bridge between the communities of Coulter and Waskada in southwest Manitoba.

The Souris River is expected to crest in Wawanesa as early as the evening of July 6.

More than 7,000 sandbags were swiftly set up by volunteers as Souris braced for flooding. High water levels have also forced peacocks out of a bird sanctuary.
