An estimated 2,700 hogs have been killed in a barn fire in southern Manitoba.

RCMP at Manitou and various local fire departments were called out around 7:30 a.m., Sunday to a location in the Rural Municipality of Pembina.

Police say emergency crews were able to contain the blaze to one section of the barn and managed to save 210 animals.

The damage estimate is $1.5 million, including the building, contents and livestock.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Manitou is about 100 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.
