The city's Executive Policy Committee (EPC) has voted to forgive the tax bill on a prime piece of Downtown real estate, the Winnipeg Goldeyes' parking lot.
The move is raising some eyebrows because Mayor Sam Katz is an owner of the team.
The Goldeyes lease the parking lot from Riverside Park Management, a non-profit organization that leases the land from the city.
A decade ago the city leased the organization the land for $1 a year plus taxes.
Two years ago the land was reassessed driving up its value. In turn, the property tax was increased to $230,000.
That's more than Riverside Park Management thinks it should pay.
On Wednesday most of the Executive Policy Committee said they agreed, citing the fact that the group isn't allowed to develop the land.
Mayor Sam Katz recused himself from the committee's vote; but he says the EPC made the right decision.
Still some councilors say an integrity commissioner should be hired to handle situations that have the appearance of a conflict of interest.
