Winnipeg might soon lose the title of Car Theft Capital of Canada.

Theft rates have dropped 40 per cent in our city since the beginning of this year.

Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) gives a lot of the credit for the decline to its immobilizer program.

Winnipeg police have also been more stringent in monitoring repeat car thieves, contributing to the decline as well.

On Wednesday MPI added 100 more vehicles to its mandatory immobilizer list.

If your vehicle is on the list, you'll be forced to get an approved immobilizer installed before you can renew your Autopac.

MPI will pay for the installation.

The list represents about 50,000 vehicles, including a number of newer models that have become popular for car thieves.

By spring MPI hopes to double the number of vehicles on the list.

Officials say the push for more immobilizers is important for the safety of Winnipeggers and the city's reputation.

In March a taxi driver was killed when his car was rammed by a stolen vehicle.

There have also been several incidents where car thieves have rammed their cars towards police officers.
