Winnipeg based New Flyer Industries, says their sales increased nearly 50 per cent in 2008, defying the economic downturn that is plaguing other North American automakers.

New Flyer is a major manufacturer of public transit buses, with one manufacturing plant in Winnipeg, and two in Minnesota.

A company spokesperson says they wrapped up last year with an order backlog worth $5.1 billion, and that despite economic conditions they don't expect to lose any of those orders.

About 78 per cent of the buses New Flyer builds use hybrid-electric or other alternative fuel engines.

Last year they were named one of Canada's most 'Earth-Friendly' companies.

New Flyer employs about 2,400 people, half of them in Winnipeg.
