Winnipeg's Peerless Garments has won a major federal government contract.

The Winnipeg company will provide camouflage rain-wear for the Canadian Armed Forces.

Peerless will provide the Department of National Defence with 74,000 rain trousers and 74,000 hooded rain jackets.

Peerless Garments has certified the fabric will be woven in Canada.

The rain-suits are one part of National Defence's "Clothe the Soldier Project" to equip the forces with year-round clothing for all types of weather conditions.

Treasury Board President Vic Toews says the two-year contract will secure 500 manufacturing jobs.

"This contract is providing our troops with Canadian-made and designed gear while helping maintain 500 manufacturing jobs here at home," said Toews.

The first shipment of rain-suits will arrive this spring.

Peerless has also produced uniforms for the Canadian Air Force and Navy.
