If you own a dog you will be paying a whole lot more for a license.

Reaction from the Winnipeg Humane Society was swift.

The Winnipeg Humane Society went on record to announce its disagreement with the City of Winnipeg proposal to increase license fees for owners of spayed and neutered dogs.

"Responsible pet owners who spay or neuter their dog should be rewarded, not suffer increases in licensing fees," said Bill McDonald, WHS Executive Director.

The WHS has received calls from the public expressing its concern with the proposed changes.

"Owners of multiple dogs will be hit the hardest, as they will need to come up with the increased fee for two or three dogs," continued McDonald.

The Winnipeg Humane Society asks the City of Winnipeg to re-examine this proposal and refrain from implementing this increase.

The proposed costs would be an increase to $30 from $22.50 for a spayed/neutered dog.

The fee increase for dogs that have not been spayed/neutered jumps from $45 to $60.

This issue will be discussed at a City of Winnipeg committee meeting on Friday.
