Landlords in Manitoba could soon charge tenants with pets a special deposit.
The NDP government has introduced amendments that would allow landlords to collect an extra half-month's rent in advance to pay for any damage caused by a pet.
Finance Minister Greg Selinger says he hopes the amendments will encourage more landlords to accept renters with pets.
Manitoba has a low vacancy rate and landlords aren't required to accept animals.
The amendments would also set out a standard tenancy agreement for landlords who provide meals, laundry or other housekeeping services.
Selinger says that will give more protection to seniors and prevent unexpected, large rate increases.
More information is available on the Residential Tenancies Branch website.

My last appartment did that anyway, and I didn't argue because finding a place that allows dogs in this city is next to impossible.

What a great idea!!! 1/2 month rent is not unreasonable considering the damage *some* (not all) pets do. As a former tenant AND a former landlord (and a pet owner!), I fully support this move.
