Manitoba Premier Gary Doer says some homeowners will be offered buyouts for their flood-ravaged properties.
Doer says residents in the Breezy Point area will have that option if they would rather move than fix up their properties.
Talks with the federal government about a joint buyout program are also ongoing.
Breezy Point, near the mouth of the Red River, is frequently flooded and was among the hardest-hit regions this year.
Ice jams caused the river to rise suddenly, forcing a lot of water and huge frozen slabs into many homes.
Doer also says the province is looking at improving flood prevention in other communities, including building a permanent dike in front of a seniors home in Selkirk.
