A 33-year-old was killed after in a hit-and-run on the Long Plains First Nation Friday night. A 53-year-old man is charged with drunk-driving causing death.

It is the third such tragedy to happen in the community in three years.

Now people living in Long Plain are calling on the RCMP to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Just before midnight Portage la Prairie RCMP were called about a man lying on a road in the community.

Officers located the man and pronounced him dead at the scene.

They later located the 53-year-old driver of the vehicle that left the scene of the accident and arrested him for impaired driving causing death, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving with a suspended license.

Family members have identified the victim as 33-year-old Jason Harris, a father of five.

There are speed and safety signs on the community's roads, but community members say the problem is no one is enforcing them.

"It's a law enforcement issue and I think the RCMP needs to step up," he told CTV News.

Chief David Meeches says since the first accident in 2006 his community has taken steps to make its roads safer, and now it is up to police to enforce the law.

"I think their presence on a more consistent basis would be a deterrent for anybody who may be driving while intoxicated."

RCMP spokesperson Line Karpish says officers can't be everywhere all the time.

She sent the following statement to CTV News:

The RCMP is committed to the safety of the Manitoba communities we serve. We have in the past and will continue to work with community leaders to best address their policing needs.

Meeches says he plans to sit down with the RCMP soon, to work out a better strategy.
