A multi-million dollar plan to redevelop Assiniboine Park was unveiled Friday morning.

The plans will dramatically change the city's largest park.

The park has been in a state of disrepair for years.

Central to the redevelopment plans are a total overhaul of the Assiniboine Park Zoo.

It includes a new arctic exhibit, primate enclosure and a new polar bear exhibit.

A new conservatory will be built, as well a nature playground for kids with things like tree forts, and winter and summer slides.

The duck pond will be expanded to three-times its current size.

There will be a new water feature which will allow people to travel down a rushing river in inner tubes, checking out the scenery along the way.

The Assiniboine Park Conservancy is spearheading the project.

Officials say their plans will make the park a destination for all Manitobans.

"We believe Assiniboine Park's overriding purpose is to connect people with nature, people, plants and animals," Assiniboine Park Conservancy CEO Margaret Redmond said.

A $180-million capital campaign is now being launched to help pay for the redevelopment plans.

The 10-year project will also need funding from all 3-levels of government to go ahead.

It is hoped construction can begin by the end of this year.
