Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a North End murder last weekend.

Investigators believe the victim and suspect were members of rival gangs, and they worry the killing may be a precursor to increased gang warfare.

Wayne Roger Michelle, 28, was walking down Manitoba Avenue with another man last Saturday night, when they were both gunned-down in the middle of the street.

A 27-year-old man was taken to hospital in stable condition, but Michelle died of his injuries.

This week police charged 20-year-old Jonathon Catcheway with second degree murder.

At Michelle's funeral on Friday family and friends came to mourn, all under the watchful eye of the Winnipeg Police Service.

They decided to attend after receiving a threat that there could be further violence.

"We wanted to have police presence there to protect anybody that may be there and require police assistance," Const. Jason Michalyshen told CTV News.

People who live in the area where the killing happened are also worried about retaliation, and that innocent bystanders could be harmed.

Resident Vince Kirton worries about the safety of his daughter.

"No kids are safe nowadays. There's a park right there, and there's probably five or ten houses in these two blocks selling drugs," he said.

Nearby there is graffiti bragging of the killing of Michelle, a public boast some worry is not likely to be ignored by other gang members.

Police say this is something they have to pay more attention to as well.

"We have to take a serious look at what we're doing and how effective we are, and find out what's going to be effective and what's not," Winnipeg Police Association President Mike Sutherland said.

"We need to put our resources into this type of activity."

People living in the North End may be familiar with the violence, but some say if it goes unchecked the violence will spread into other neighbourhoods, and police may have to guard more funerals in the future.
