The East-Side Eagles Football Club will be able to move forward with the replacement of its artificial field turf, thanks to funding from the federal and provincial governments.

On Monday Premier Gary Doer on behalf of the Province of Manitoba and Joy Smith, Member of Parliament for Kildonan-St.Paul, on behalf of the federal government announced funding for renovations that will create jobs in Winnipeg.

"The East Side Eagles Football Club is a staple in East Kildonan," Premier Gary Doer said.

"This facility has played host to National and International tournaments and the investment in this facility today will not only ensure this high level of competition remains in this community, but it will keep physical activity at the forefront for all residents."

"I'm pleased to announce our Government's support for the East Side Eagles Football field replacement," MP Smith said.

"Investments such as this will help put Canadians to work, encourage greater participation in physical activity and use of recreational facilities, and ensure that communities across the West have access to the essential infrastructure we need today and in the future."

The total cost of the project is $568,000.

Federal funding of $212,000 is provided through the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program under Canada's Economic Action Plan.

The Province of Manitoba is contributing $50,000.

Under the project, the East Side Eagles Football Club will replace its current artificial turf. This rehabilitation will improve local recreational facilities for the residents of Winnipeg.

"The East Side Eagles Football Club is thankful for the support we are receiving for our field project," said Ian Brown, President of the East Side Eagles Football Club. "The benefits of this investment to the amateur sport community in the province, including the 37,000 plus participants that use our facility each year will be seen for years to come."
