Safety concerns about the distinctive smokestack at the Citytv building at The Forks have prompted crews to remove part of the structure.

The concerns cropped up during a routine inspection of the building.

An area in front of the television station has been blocked to foot traffic as crews work to remove several metres from the top of the smokestack.

The project is expected to take four to six weeks.

Built in 1847, the building originally served as a coal-fired steam plant.

The facility was decommissioned in 1992 and converted into a TV station.
