Winnipeg police have charged a 17-year-old with second-degree murder in the death of his father.

Police say a 49-year-old man was killed at the family's Charleswood home sometime in the last week of June.

The victim's name is not being released, police say, in order to protect the identity of the suspect under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Investigators believe the man died from stab wounds.

A statement from Winnipeg police says the suspect allegedly disposed of the victim in a rural area of northern Manitoba.

Officers are searching in Winnipeg as well as the northern site where it's believed the remains were dumped.
