New mailboxes have been popping up in Winnipeg, and will soon be surfacing in other Manitoba communities.

Canada Post says it is part of a national plan to replace old boxes.

The mail service says the new boxes are graffiti resistant and equipped with high-security locks to prevent theft.

The boxes, which hold a clear, plastic box instead of a mail bag, also improve safety for carriers because they can see if any garbage or dangerous materials have been dropped inside.

About 640 mailboxes in Winnipeg will be replaced by the end of August.

Boxes in the other parts of the province will be upgraded in September.
