The province is beginning to run television ads this week aimed at stopping texting and driving.

Minister of Infrastructure and Transportation Ron Lemieux says the government is serious about stopping the practice and the danger it poses on the road.

Beginning in June of 2010, it will be illegal to text or talk on handheld devices while driving. A first offense will cost close to $200.

In the UK, a graphic video about the dangers of texting and driving has been getting much attention.

Some drivers CTV News spoke with said the UK ad is more effective than the Manitoba ads.

The province, however, said it does not intend to use shocking images in its campaign which will begin running on television soon.
