Some residents of Winnipeg's Tuxedo neighbourhood are upset that a federal court ruling could pave the way for some First Nations to develop Kapyong Barracks.

The barracks have been vacant for years and the Department of National Defence had planned on selling it to the Canada Lands Company for development, but yesterday a judge ruled the government had not properly consulted First Nations on the deal.

Chief Glenn Hudson of Peguis First Nation is confident that First Nations will win possession of the long-disputed property on Kenaston Boulevard and Grant Avenue because of the ruling.

Hudson says future development of the land could include the construction of a casino and an urban reserve with housing and businesses.

Many residents CTV News spoke to said they're opposed to the idea of a casino or urban reserve near their neighbourhood.

The federal government has 30 days to appeal the judge's ruling.
