Winnipeg police have caught a second man wanted for allegedly beating a victim to death in a hotel room.

Police had issued an arrest warrant for Oliver Newton John McCallum, 29, on a charge of second degree murder Thursday morning. In the afternoon, police announced he had been caught.

McCallum was sought in connection with the death of Edward John Denetchezhe, 60, whose body was found on Monday at the St. Regis Hotel in the 200 block of Smith Street.

Another suspect, Paul Clemence Cawson, 31, was previously arrested and charged with second degree murder in connection with the death.

CTV News learned that friends knew the victim by his nickname of "Cheezie." He was originally from the Lac Brochet area in northern Manitoba, but lived in Winnipeg for at least the last 20 years.

Police say the three men were socializing in a room at the St. Regis Hotel when a dispute happened and the two suspects allegedly beat the victim, who sustained serious injuries to his upper body. The suspects fled the room and the victim later died. An autopsy shows cause of death was blunt force trauma to the upper body, said police.

The homicide unit continues to investigate.
