Winnipeg police and RCMP raided multiple homes in the city and in rural areas Friday morning as part of an investigation into organized crime and drugs.

Officers arrested several people and large quantities of drugs and cash were seized, along with weapons.

Members of the tactical support team, street crimes unit and other police units were involved in the drug busts. Officers hit homes in Garden City, the Maples, North Kildonan and other neighbourhoods.

Winnipeg's organized crime unit targeted a drug trafficking cell with connections to Asian-organized crime that was apparently responsible for moving millions of dollars worth of cocaine.

"It's a high priority to identify and target individuals involved in drug trafficking and organized crime," said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.

At a cabin in Winnipeg Beach, police moved in and then quickly retreated, sealing the area off with police tape, said people living nearby. The serious crimes unit was called in but RCMP aren't saying what they are investigating there.

Winnipeg police say they'll release more information Monday on the arrests within the city.
