Winnipeg is the first city in Canada to have a fire rescue house, a building that provides a temporary living place to people who have lost their homes to fire.
State-of-the-art fire alarms and sprinklers have been placed throughout to give people peace of mind in the building, which is called the Steven Perchyshyn Fire Rescue House, named after the late firefighter who donated funds to make the home a reality.
Martin Johnson of the Firefighters Burn Fund says it provides an emergency shelter for families.
People who stay at the house pay $30 a day, which covers bedding, furniture and food.
Officials say the house still needs some items, such as toys, toiletries and linens.
People interested in making a donation can get contact information on the North End House Project's website at: http://www.nehp.mb.ca/
