A woman had her purse stolen but wasn't injured after being robbed in Winnipeg during the Tuesday noon hour.

She was walking in the 300 block of Portage Avenue when she was approached from behind by an unknown male who grabbed her arm, according to officers.

Police say the suspect demanded her purse and said he had a knife.

Police say the suspect is a man in his thirties who is aboriginal in appearance. He is about 180 pounds (81.6 kg) and 5'10'' (177 cm) with an average build. He has long dark hair that was worn in a ponytail or braid on the night of the incident. He was wearing a red and white long-sleeved checkered shirt, dark blue jeans, and white shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at 986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 786-TIPS (8477).

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind the public to be aware of their personal safety at all times.

When possible, travel in pairs or with a group

Carry a personal alarm and carry it in plain view

Be aware of your surroundings and avoid unfamiliar shortcuts

Conceal valuable personal property

Stay on busy well-lighted streets
