The Manitoba government is investing $357,000 to expand support services for people struggling with homelessness.
Part of the money will go to funding seven outreach mentors whose main task is to help guide individuals through day to day activities in a holistic manner. This includes connecting people with support services.
The outreach workers will work in Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson and The Pas.
The Canadian Mental Health Association is also teaming up with the province to create new strategies that address the mental health challenges some homeless people face.
"We believe this strategy can improve lives while at the same time reduce demand on other services such as emergency rooms and crisis services," says Glen Kruck, regional manager of CMHA Westman.
The province will also work with the Resource Assistance for Youth (RAY) organization, using their expertise in street outreach and housing to help develop programs.
