Two Manitobans are having the national spotlight shone on them. Jimmy Victor Beardy and Paul Linklater of Thompson have been awarded the Governor General Medals of Bravery for rescuing two children from a burning house.
On December 18, 2004, Beardy and Linklater entered a burning house in Thompson. They woke up a family of five who were sleeping.
They rescued two children. Two more family members made it out of the house on their own. A third child was recued by firefighters.
The two Manitoba men will be joined by eleven other recipients of the medals of bravery; while another person will receive the Star of Courage. The awards will be presented by Governor General Michaelle Jean at a later date.
The medal of bravery recognizes acts of bravery in hazardous circumstances. The cross of valour is given to people who risked their lives to lives to save or protect the lives of others.
