Political debates are no longer reserved for provincial politicians.

A group of young people got a taste of politics at the 88th Youth Parliament of Manitoba held at the Legislature in Winnipeg.

On Sunday, members were debating legislation they created, including the National Safety and Security Act, focused on creating Canada's "war on crime" strategy.

Grade 12 student Irene Xie is participating for the first time this year. She says the debates did get heated but none of the comments were taken personally.

Other student-created legislation included the Child Care Act which calls for a nationalized day care system to be created.
