A man is dead after being caught in a house fire in God's Lake Narrows at around 5 a.m. on Friday.

Police responded to a call about the blaze but were not initially aware that a person was inside the home, which was fully engulfed in flames. While on scene, they were notified.

The remains of what appeared to be a 26-year-old man was found inside, say officers. His name will not been released until a positive identification has been made.

An autopsy is scheduled Saturday at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.

Joey Okemow, 22, of God's Lake Narrows was charged with manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death and arson. He will appear at the Thompson provincial courthouse on January 5.

RCMP, Thompson Forensic Identification Services and the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner are investigating.
