A 38-year-old doctor faces a charge for an alleged sexual assault of a female patient in Lac du Bonnet said RCMP.

Officers received a complaint from an adult female about a sexual assault involving a doctor on March 17, 2009.

An investigation has led to Dr. Mohamed Sadhakkathulla Kadirsahib of Pinawa being charged with one count of sexual assault, said RCMP. The suspect has been released from custody with conditions.

The suspect was working at the Lac du Bonnet Health Centre when the alleged incident occurred during an examination of the victim, said police.

The doctor is still practicing but when the allegations came to light, the College of Physicians and Surgeons began requiring a female attendant be present in the room whenever a female patient was being examined, said the North Eastman Health Association.

"With having the assurance that every time a female patient would be examined by this physician, the College, and in fact we too, would have the assurance that this was in fact safe," said Jim Hayes from the North Eastman Health Association.

Some women told CTV News on Tuesday that a female attendant wasn't present when they met with the doctor. The health association says they will be examining the matter.

While some residents told CTV News they were shocked by the alleged sexual assault, some other residents said they still support the doctor.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons wouldn't comment about the specifics of the case.

The suspect is scheduled to appear in court in Winnipeg on February 17.
