A Portage la Prairie woman who was clinging to life after being assaulted has died.

Charges against her husband have been upgraded from attempted murder to first-degree murder.

Police and EMS crews were called to a Portage La Prairie home on Jan. 20.

The 47-year-old woman was found unconscious.

EMS crews attempted to get a pulse from the victim. She was taken to the Portage General Hospital.

Kenneth Edward McDougall, 54, faces a charge of first-degree murder.

RCMP identified the victim as Justina McDougall, 47, of Portage la Prairie.

On Jan. 27, RCMP said an autopsy determined cause of death was asphyxiation.
