An initiative geared towards training hotel staff to spot and report situations where children could be sexually exploited will soon be in effect in Manitoba, said officials.

Officials said sexual predators sometimes make use of motel and hotel rooms to exploit children.

The province is partnering with the Manitoba Hotel Association on the initiative to counter sexual exploitation. It's based on a similar campaign unveiled in Alberta last year.

"This campaign will give the people who work in our industry the information and tools they need to prevent this child abuse in hotels," said Jim Baker, president and CEO of the Manitoba Hotel Association, in a statement.

The association will work with police and the province, teaching hotel staff ranging from housekeeping to front-desk employees, what to look for if a child is being sexually exploited.

Police said it will allow them to respond to incidents.

"(If) they can immediately notify police or Child and Family Services of the concern, it gives us the ability to investigate," said Insp. Bill Fogg.

Further details on the campaign will be announced in April, said the province.
