Diamond lanes were created for use by transit buses and cyclists during rush hour traffic, but officials are now considering expanding that regulation to include other vehicles.
City council has asked city planners to examine the idea of allowing taxi cabs and car-pooling vehicles into the diamond lanes as well, a system in place in other cities.
Taxi companies had previously approached city hall about allowing cabs into diamond lanes, saying it's not fair that only bicyclists and buses are allowed into the quicker-moving diamond lanes during rush hour.
"We like to save (customers) money and provide quick service for our customers," says Gurmail Mangat of Unicity Taxi.
A report by city planners is expected to be complete this summer. After that is submitted, city council will decide whether or not to allow cabs and car-pooling vehicles to drive in diamond lanes.
