A 14-year old boy is in police custody after he allegedly threw a kitchen knife at his mother seriously injuring her.

Police were called to a home in the 600 block of Toronto Street on Saturday around 6 a.m. with reports of a woman being stabbed.

According to police the 31-year old woman had been involved in an argument with her son

"She had been drinking and she wanted to drive and he didn't want to let her," said Constable Blair Good.

Good said the boy threw the kitchen knife at his mother when she walked away with a jacket that may have had the the car keys in it.

The knife hit the woman in the upper body causing what police say are serious injuries.

The suspect fled the scene and the woman was rushed to hospital in unstable condition.

The 14-year old returned to the home where he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault

"It started out he tried to protect her but in the end injured her," said Good.

The woman has been upgraded to stable condition.
