The civic election is six months away but people are already being asked to weigh in on who will be sitting in the mayor's seat next term.

A newly released poll by Probe Research says current mayor Sam Katz is sitting steady with a strong lead against his opponents.

More than six hundred eligible voters were surveyed with 51 per cent of the decided voters indicating they would re-elect Katz. However, one-third of all voters' survey said they would cast their ballot for NDP MP Judy Wasylycia-Leis if she decides to enter the race.

The only candidate who has officially announced she will run in the race is Elmwood-East Kildonan city councillor Lillian Thomas. Just two per cent of those survey said they would vote for Thomas while seven per cent would vote for Transcona city councillor Russ Wyatt.

Probe Research President Scott McKay says the two potential candidates draw from very different bases.

Katz has the support of men and those living in the southern end of the city while Wasylycia-Leis draws the large part of her support from those living in the north end and somewhat so from women.

The survey also indicates younger voters are leaning towards Katz.
