Winnipeg police have charged five male teenage suspects with second-degree murder for the death of 17-year-old Frank Green Jr.

His body was found in a cemetery on Archibald Street in September.

Three 18-year-old suspects and two 17-year-old suspects are in custody and face second-degree murder charges, said police.

The victim's family expressed gratitude to police for the arrests.

Green's parents said they're relieved by charges being laid.

"Right now, I have peace of mind that they got them," said the victim's father, Frankie Green.

But the family is still also dealing with its grief.

"They can't bring the life of my son back. But I pray, God, give my son justice for what (they've) done to him," said Edie Green, Frank Green Jr.'s mother.

Police said the suspects all knew the victim prior to his death. After Green was killed, his family was victimized again when someone fired a bullet through its front window.

That has led some to worry about tensions within the Filipino community. The victim's aunt is also the Philippine Consul General and is appealing for calm.

In the hours before Green's body was found in September, police received reports of a number of males running from the cemetery. Surveillance video at a nearby convenience store captured images of people on the same night which allowed investigators to focus on tracking down suspects.

Police said the suspects have gang connections but won't comment on whether or not the victim had any as well.

Green's mother said she doesn't know any of those charged for her son's death. She said she wants them to answer one question.

"Why did you have to kill him?" asks Edie Green.

At this point, police said they don't have a clear indication of the motivation for the killing.
