A 32-year-old man faces a charge under Manitoba's Wildfires Act after a blaze burned down a bridge in the RM of Roland on April 24.

Morden RCMP and fire crews were called to the blaze around 5:40 p.m. at the North Shannon Creek Bridge, south of Highway 23.

Fire officials said the bridge was well engulfed by the time crews arrived and it was too late to save the structure.

A grass fire had set the bridge ablaze, said RCMP. The bridge was destroyed by the fire. No injuries were reported in the incident.

As a result of the blaze, there is no access across the North Shannon Creek on Road 17W and the road at the location is closed for an indefinite period.

According to some estimates, the structure could cost as much as $750,000 to replace since it was a three-span bridge.

Some residents suspect a less expensive culvert will be installed instead. Some local farmers said it will pose a bit of an inconvenience to use another route in the meantime.

Vitali Weiss, 32, of the Myrtle area faces a charge for an offence under the Wildfires Act for allegedly starting a grass fire that burned out of control, said RCMP.
