A couple escaped a house fire in River Heights and now police are now investigating whether the blaze is connected to a break-in at the home.

Police said they were called to the home in the 800 block of Borebank Street at about 4:30 a.m. Thursday to investigate a break-and-enter when a fire broke out in the basement.

According to neighbours, the couple who live inside were able to get out of the house safely.

Officials have estimated the damage to the home at $325,000.

Police have not yet said if the break-and-enter is related to the fire and have not arrested any suspects.
