The death of a 64-year-old man in Melita is being investigated as a homicide, said RCMP. A male youth was arrested Wednesday morning.

Around 5 p.m. on May 14, officers were called about a man found deceased in Melita which is located about 330 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.

An autopsy was completed and an investigation revealed the victim, Francis Melvin Renwick, 64, died from foul play, said RCMP. The cause of death has not yet been released. Renwick was found in a suite at the retirement home where he lived.

The victim's family tells CTV News that Renwick was beaten to death. Relatives believe he had been previously targeted, possibly by teens in the area.

Renwick's brother believes assaults may have been going on for months.

"I don't think (this) was the first time," said Milton Renwick.

Francis Melvin Renwick was a career farmer who moved to Melita. Family members describe him as a handyman who would help anyone.

Police arrested a male youth in Melita on Wednesday morning, but charges have not been laid.

RCMP are still investigating and are trying to determine where Renwick was killed.

"(When) someone is found deceased in their residence, it doesn't necessarily imply they were killed in their residence," said Sgt. Line Karpish, spokesperson for the RCMP.

A funeral for Renwick will be held on Friday.
