A 14-year-old boy has been arrested after two children were injured in a shooting Wednesday evening in the West End. CTV News has learned the shooting is believed to be the result of an ongoing dispute between two teenagers.

While it's not known if the two had gang ties, CTV News has learned the incident is not related to any gang turf war.

Officers were called around 6 p.m. to a residence in the 500 block of Victor Street on Wednesday.

Gunshots had been fired through a window into a residence, hitting a 10-year-old girl in the leg.

An eight-year-old girl also received a superficial upper body injury believed to be caused from debris, said police.

The victims, who are sisters, were listed in stable condition on Thursday. An armed suspect was spotted running away.

Kerry Flemington lives in the area and heard about five or six shots.

"We immediately called 911 because…in this neighbourhood we unfortunately know what gunfire sounds like," said Flemington.

Police have arrested a 14-year-old and said more arrests are pending.

Investigators said the incident was not a random act, but add the young girls were not the intended targets.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact police at 986-6219, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.

Officers said the shooting Wednesday evening is not connected to the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy one street away on Toronto Street on Tuesday.

Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill spoke to media Thursday about the recent violence.

"The important thing is to let people know that these things cannot be tolerated," said McCaskill.

Residents in the area have said they want the violence to stop and are hoping for more police on their streets.

Since the shootings, officers have stepped up patrols and their presence in the neighbourhood.
