A 35-year-old woman has been charged with attempted murder after two of her children were stabbed at an apartment building in the 300 block of Kennedy Street.

CTV News has learned that officers are investigating whether the woman was suffering from postpartum depression.

Police have confirmed two boys, a four-month-old and a nine-year-old, were stabbed and are in stable condition.

The suspect's 32-year-old sister was also stabbed.

The suspect's four-month-old niece was also at home with the suspect at the time, officers said.

Police said the nine-year-old was stabbed in the midsection and then fled the apartment and alerted a security guard who contacted emergency services.

The baby was stabbed multiple times in the lower body, but is now in stable condition.

On Thursday, Duty Staff Sergeant Andrew Smith said that anytime a stab wound happens to a four month old, it is treated very seriously.

The 32-year-old woman was also stabbed when she tried to intervene and a struggle ensued, police said.

The suspect was disarmed and restrained until police arrived.

The suspect is in police custody and is facing numerous charges, including three counts of attempted murder.

The suspect's brother-in-law, who is also the husband of the 32-year-woman who was stabbed, told CTV News that his wife and the two children are going to be okay.

James Mayen, who lived across the hall from the family for less than a year, said he often heard the woman shouting at her children.

"She is not happy all the time. She looks like somebody that is stressed or frustrated all the time," he said.

Friends of the woman said she had been going through tough times after immigrating to Canada from Somalia six years ago.
