Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh were the first official visitors to pass through the new terminal at the James A. Richardson International Airport.

The airport has been under construction since 2007 and the overhaul won't be ready for the public until the fall or winter, but officials are made an exception for the royal visitors on Saturday.

Dignitaries, cadets and war veterans were on hand for the royal visit.

An invitation-only event was held at the airport and the Queen signed a letter to Manitoba youth that was entered into a time capsule.
