Police charged four suspects with conspiring to commit a robbery after cab driver was stabbed in the 3000 block of Pembina Highway on Saturday.

One of the suspects in the robbery escaped police custody. Police issued a request for information and a warning to the public on Saturday afternoon before the suspect was rearrested hours later.

The 21-year-old male suspect, Shawn Bruyere, was taken to the district six police station for processing where he escaped at about 2:20 p.m., officers said.

He was not handcuffed, but was in a secure area of the building when he successfully escaped.

At 6:50 p.m., Bruyere was rearrested in the 900 block of Carrigan Place without incident.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Bruyere, along with a 20-year-old female suspect, a 16-year-old female suspect, and a 23-year-old male suspect had conspired to rob a cab driver, police said.

One of the suspects called a cab to their location and once the driver arrived, he was confronted and stabbed to the upper body, officers said.

The suspects and the cab driver fled the area.

The victim was located in hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

With aid from the canine unit, police located and arrested five suspects in the area of Pembina Highway and Newdale Avenue.

The suspects were conveyed to the district six police station for further processing, where Bruyere escaped from custody.

Officers learned that the suspects were also involved in a break-and-enter incident in the area of the 2900 block of Pembina Highway prior to the stabbing, police said.

The four suspects police believe were involved in the robbery were charged with armed robbery, conspiracy to commit a robbery, break-and-enter and theft.

Bruyere was also charged with escaping lawful custody.

The fifth suspect, a 19-year-old man, was only charged for the break-and-enter.
