The family of Winnipeg's latest homicide victim wants the public to know that he wasn't a gang member.

Dylan Ferland, 18, was shot twice while standing outside of a friend's house smoking a cigarette on Thursday night.

A number of other bullets went through the windows, curtains, and walls of the house.

Officers believe the house, and possibly Ferland himself, were the target of the shooting. They said he was known to police before his death.

Ferland's mother, upset by the characterization of her son as a "gang associate," said that Ferland's older brother is in a gang, and is currently in jail, but the younger brother had never been a gang member.

"I don't like when they said he was an ‘associate.' I'm his mom – his family, his neighbours, does that makes us associates too?" she said.

Ferland's mother said her son knew gang members, but he wanted to find a proper job.

Last October, her home was shot at, but no one was hurt. Ferland's mother said she has anger towards her older son because she thinks his gang connection could be the reason her family has gone through such trouble.

No one was arrested in the October shooting, but the family is hoping they won't have to wait long for Ferland's murder to be solved.

The homicide unit is investigating and police are asking anyone with information about the murder to come forward.
