A 33-year-old man has died after being assaulted outside a Corydon Avenue bar early Wednesday morning.

Gary Rent, 33, was rushed to hospital in critical condition but died from injuries, said police on Thursday.

The incident happened near Bar Italia on Corydon Avenue.

An investigation determined the victim was assaulted by an employee near the intersection of Corydon Avenue and Cockburn Street around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday, said police.

The suspect later turned himself in.

The victim's mother said she's devastated by the loss of her son.

"He was fantastic. And he believed in honesty, justice, truth," said Deanna Rent. "He wanted us to be healthy. He had a lot of extremely good ideas and I loved him for it. I tried to follow him, watch over him. I did my best, but he's gone now."

Nicholas Garrett Somers, 26, of Winnipeg faces a charge for manslaughter, said police.
