A 50-year-old man with a disability said he came close to death after a suspect stabbed and robbed him in downtown Winnipeg.

"He meant to kill me," said Rodney Buick. He uses two canes to walk, after breaking his neck eight years ago.

Buick was trying to cross Vaughn Street near Graham Avenue to catch a bus around 10:00 p.m. on July 30. A man came up to him and demanded two dollars.

When Buick didn't hand over the money, the suspect stabbed Buick four times, nicking an artery and puncturing a lung.

Buick fell to the ground.

"I could hear the air coming out of my lung. The blood was gurgling out of me," he said.

A nurse was passing by and came to Buick's aid, holding a shirt to his wound until emergency crews arrived.

"I wouldn't be here (without her). I need find her and thank her for saving my life," he said.

Buick believes he was targeted by the suspect.

"Where am I going to run? I'm holding two canes in my hands," he said.

After the stabbing, the suspect ran off down an alley. Investigators are still trying to track him down.

Buick wants the suspect caught and worries about the safety of others.

"He's going to do it again. He'll kill somebody," said Buick.

The suspect that officers are looking for is described as a male, about 30 to 40-years-old with a scruffy face and wearing all-black clothing, including a baseball hat, shirt and shorts.

Anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
