A man with a disability who was stabbed and robbed in downtown Winnipeg has been reunited with the two people who helped saved his life.

Rodney Buick, 50, was attacked while walking near Vaughn Street and Graham Avenue on July 30. It was around 10:00 p.m. and he was on his way to catch a bus. Someone came up to him, demanded two dollars and then stabbed him four times in the chest, said Buick.

On August 6, Buick was reunited with the two people, Brooklyn D'aleo and her friend Darien Valentine, who ran to his aid.

"I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for you guys," Buick told the two on Friday.

D'aleo, a nurse, put pressure on his wounds following the stabbing.

The pair tried to keep Buick calm until paramedics arrived.

Buick believes he was targeted by the suspect because of his disability. Eight years ago, he fell and broke his neck and now uses two canes to help him walk.

Buick said he can't believe how lucky he was that D'aleo and Valentine were there to come to his aid.

"I thought, ‘someone's looking out for me.' The universe is doing (its) best spin because there's a nurse here with her hands on my chest," he said.

D'aleo said her reaction was automatic.

"If this was my child, I just hope someone would have done the same thing," she said.

Buick said he plans to keep in touch with D'aleo and Valentine and now calls them his guardian angels.

Police continue to look for the man who attacked Buick.

The suspect is described as a male, about 30 to 40-years-old with a scruffy face and wearing all-black clothing, including a baseball hat, shirt and shorts.

Anyone with information on the suspect or incident is asked to contact investigators at 986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
