A man is in hospital after being shot Saturday morning in one of many violent incidents in Winnipeg that happened within a span of less than 24 hours.

Police were driving down Ellice Avenue while responding to a call about a stabbing on Maryland Street Saturday morning around 5 a.m. when they heard a gunshot.

Officers stopped near Ellice Avenue and Sherbrook Street and saw a wounded male run out of a building. The male was armed with a gun, said police.

Officers ordered the man to drop his weapon and he complied. Officers determined the man's gunshot wound was not self-inflicted. The victim, a man in his early twenties, was taken to hospital in unstable condition and was later upgraded to stable condition.

Police surrounded a three-storey apartment complex on the southwest corner of Sherbrook Street and Ellice Avenue looking for the suspect. The building was evacuated and the tactical support team was called in.

"The tactical team did bring out people who are being detained as part of the investigation. It is preliminary to say if those people are suspects in the shooting or not," said Const. Robert Carver, a spokesperson for Winnipeg police.

Police said they are not looking for any other suspects.

For the stabbing incident that officers were called to before they heard the gunshot, police said a 24-year-old woman was stabbed in the 400 block of Maryland Street. She was taken to hospital in stable condition. A 24-year-old male has been charged with aggravated assault, said police.

Officers also responded to a number of other stabbing incidents Friday night and into Saturday morning.

Around 11:30 p.m. Friday, a man with a stab wound to his neck sought treatment and walked into the emergency room at Health Sciences Centre. The victim remains in hospital in stable condition.

Police determined the victim was stabbed earlier in the evening in the 100 block of Sherbrook Street. Officers continue to investigate.

A few hours earlier, a 22-year-old man was stabbed after being approached by two suspects around 8 p.m. in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue, said police. The victim fled to McGregor Street and Manitoba Avenue where he collapsed. A passerby called police. The victim was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Anyone with information on the incidents is asked to call police at 986-6219, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.

Officers also took suspects into custody on Alfred Avenue after receiving a gun call on Saturday afternoon.

The death of a man on Winnipeg Avenue early Saturday is also under investigation as a fatal stabbing.
