A blaze that claimed the life of a 90-year-old man in Winnipeg Beach is now being investigated as a case of arson and homicide, said RCMP.

The body of Patrick Gallagher, 90, was found inside the residence on Ash Avenue following a fire on Aug. 6, said RCMP.

An autopsy was carried out on Aug. 7 and determined the victim died from smoke inhalation.

Gallagher's neighbours were shocked to hear the fire was deliberately set.

"To just look across at the shambles and just realize that someone died there after such a long and beautiful life, it's just senseless," said Jessica Cogan, who lives across the street.

Gallagher's children said they were too upset to speak on camera, but did say he spent time in the army and fought in the Second World War.

Family said Gallagher loved working in the garden and considered his home his legacy to pass on to relatives.

Other residents in the area have reported recent attempted arsons, said RCMP.

Some residents in the area told CTV News they want more of a police presence in the area, especially in the summer.

The mayor of Winnipeg Beach said he is saddened by the news of Gallagher's death. He added the RCMP do a good job of patrolling the area and there are no plans to increase the police presence, but he does encourage people to report any future incidents of vandalism, violence or arson.

A 17-year-old male youth was arrested, questioned and released without charges following the Aug. 6 fire, said officers.

Anyone with information on the fire is asked to contact Gimli RCMP at (204) 642-5106, or Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
