The opening of the new terminal at Winnipeg's airport has been delayed until sometime in 2011, said airport officials.

It had been previously hoped the new terminal would be ready by October 2010 at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.

"Certainly, it's disappointing. We were looking forward to that opening," said Christine Alongi, a spokesperson with the Winnipeg Airports Authority.

In August, however, the contractor discovered problems with underground piping, which have pushed back the completion date. Constructions crews continue to work at the site and officials continue to investigate problems with the sewage and drainage pipes.

The terminal's building, meanwhile, is almost complete.

The new terminal is now expected to open in early to mid 2011 but that also depends on the time it takes the contractor to resolve the underground issues, said airport officials.

When fully completed, the new terminal will be able to handle an extra one million passengers each year, said airport officials.
