Charges against a suspect have been upgraded to include second-degree murder after a man who was robbed and set on fire on Sept. 10 died on Monday.

Gerald Dumas, 47, died yesterday in hospital more than two weeks after the attack, said relatives.

On Sept. 10, he was walking in a Selkirk Avenue back lane, between Powers Street and Andrews Street, when he was attacked around 11:30 p.m.

Dumas was knocked to the ground and a suspect checked through his pockets before pouring a liquid on him and then setting Dumas on fire. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition and died from injuries on Sept. 27.

Following the incident, Gaston Leroy Genaille, 19, was charged with aggravated assault, robbery with violence and two counts of breach of probation, said police. Genaille had also been wanted on a warrant for a previous assault incident.

On Sept. 28, officers said Genaille had been also charged with second-degree murder after police consulted with the Crown attorney's office about the case.
