Winnipeg Police are trying to piece together how and why a 21-year-old woman was shot to death in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sources have identified the victim as 21-year-old Tiffany Johnston.

The shooting occurred around 4 a.m. in the 600 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Errol Peebles, who lives in the area, said he heard popping sounds around that time, but didn't think of much them and went back to bed.

"There's always stuff like that around here. There's fire crackers going off, kids, I don't know, it's kind of normal now," Peebles said.

Some neighbours say they heard five or six shots fired.

Neighbour Dakotah Bruce said the home is well known in the area and considered a party place where people are often drinking and fighting.

"Even before the shooting happened there was gunshots going — they just fire off in the air," Bruce said.

Police won't say how the home is involved in the investigation, but evidence markers can be seen on the porch, the front lawn and beside the house next door.

CTV News has learned the victim was found between two houses.

At this point, police can't say if the shooting was random or if the victim was the intended target.

"We are exploring all possible avenues with respect to gathering as much evidence as we can," said Const. Natalie Aitken.
