Much of southern Manitoba will be subject to bad weather Tuesday evening and into Wednesday, with heavy rainfall, high water levels and strong winds on the way, said the province.

Weather officials expect rainfall Wednesday to range from 20 to 40 mm Wednesday over areas including Portage la Prairie, Morden and Ste. Rose.

About 10 to 15 cm of snowfall is expected in most areas west of the Manitoba escarpment and over the higher elevations of the Riding, Duck, and Turtle mountains.

The storm comes with northerly winds that could gust up to 80 to 90 km per hour starting Tuesday evening and continuing through to Wednesday afternoon in some areas.

Manitoba Water Stewardship advises that water levels are increasing, and are expected to continue rising in most of the rivers and creeks within western and southern Manitoba. These rivers include the Red, Assiniboine, Pembina, Swan and Little Saskatchewan.

However, run-off waters should not overflow riverbanks, as levels were relatively low before the storm started, said officials.

Lake levels in Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipeg could increase by over a half a meter due to winds in the near future.
Waves could be as high as four feet tall in the southern basin of Lake Winnipeg, said provincial officials.
